Once upon a Friday night...
Friday night in San Francisco? Sort of. Probably not Friday, and Vancouver rather than SF, but we managed to get tickets at the last minute to the "Friday Night in San Francisco" tour.
We expected to be seated in the entrance hall outside the theater, but... Holy Shit! They're putting chairs in front of the "front row" and, over some unpleasant objections from the front-row crowd, we were given the best seats in the house.
Why were we there? Well, because Al Demiola and John Mclaughlin were playing live with some Spanish guy. Those two were maybe the greatest non-rock guitarists that I knew about, so, whoever the other guy was, I wanted to hear them.
Yeah. Right. Did I ever get my eyes (ears?) opened. The "other guy" was Paco de Lucia, and the night was basically Paco and two backup players. Which is to cast no shade on two guys who were/are incredible musicians, but rather to say that Sr. de Lucia was simply playing in another universe.
They toured the "Friday Night in San Francisco" album around the world, and, from what I have been able to listen to, some nights one and some nights another shone brightest. But that night in Vancouver? Holy shit!
So, here is a link to the official version (Paco de Lucia in the spotlight)...

Oh, and for anyone who wants to dis Mclaughlin, which it seems some do, check out his work with Shakti and, later, with Remember Shakti. (Heard the latter live in Seattle. Mind-blowing.)

@David-Harris
No dissing John McLaughlin here. I’ve been a fan since I heard The Mahavishnu Orchestra in the 70’s in New Orleans. (My roommate was a jazz guitarist.) We saw them live.McLaughlin's ability to play in so many genres including jazz, Classical, flamenco and blues goes unnoticed by many music aficionados, but is lauded by legendary guitarists as the one of the world's best. He played on several of Miles Davis's album's such as Bitches Brew and was a member of a band with Graham Bond, Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce (The Graham Bond Organisation).
